Proponents have long argued that the circuit covers too much territory and too many people and its docket is unmanageable; critics say the current system isn't broken and motivations for the split are merely political.     

"Release of Volume II to Congress under the proposed conditions presents a substantial and unacceptable risk of prejudice to [the remaining co-defendants]," U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon wrote in her order blocking the release of former Special Counsel Jack Smith's final report explaining the now-abandoned classified records retention case against President Donald Trump.     

In recent years, State attorneys general have become increasingly creative and aggressive in antitrust enforcement, often launching litigation on high-profile issues. The second Trump Administration may turbocharge these trends—particularly for Democratic state attorneys general.     

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau filed one lawsuit and reached five settlements last week, totaling nearly $206.6 million in civil resolutions and redress.
