A California federal judge on Friday issued a preliminary injunction barring, for now, the $6.2 billion merger of broadcast giants Nexstar and Tegna, ruling that state attorneys general and DirecTV are likely to prevail in proving that the deal is anticompetitive and will harm consumers as well as distributors.

A Manhattan federal judge Friday refused to block Johnson & Johnson from advertising its prostate cancer drug as having a lower risk of death compared with Bayer's medication, saying Bayer has not shown it is likely to succeed on its claims that its rival's advertising campaign is false or misleading.

A California state judge Friday largely denied Alec Baldwin's request for summary judgment in a negligence case brought by the chief lighting technician on the film "Rust," teeing the case up for trial.

"No one wants their name associated with [Eric Swalwell] because of these allegations," a legal insider said of the many lawyers who contributed funds to Swalwell's gubernatorial campaign before the California Democrat exited the race following allegations of sexual misconduct.     

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filed 456 enforcement actions in fiscal year 2025, a 22% drop from FY 2024.     

New amendments approved by the U.S. Sentencing Commission reduce the emphasis on loss calculations in white-collar cases and give judges greater discretion to consider culpability and noneconomic harm. The changes could lead to more individualized sentences, lighter penalties in some fraud cases, and less litigation ahead of sentencing, one observer said.     

"That's a very favorable sort of broad interpretation of rights under the First Amendment," said a lawyer for John Eastman. "We can probably extrapolate from that."
